Lady Kate

 
Lady Kate. First joined the household, accompanied by her mother, while being ferried across England to the estate of her husband, a minor nobleman then fighting for the King in France. On hearing the sad news of his passing she had the option of either retiring to his manor to live in seclusion and be utterly dependant on the new lord and Lady, enter a nunnery or accept the protection of His Grace, the Bishop of Durham.

His Grace kindly attempts to provide for Lady Kate, and to that end has arranged numerous advantageous matches.
Unhappily Lady Kate has a knack for short marriages (once an allowance has been settled on her), leaving her no choice but to return to the protection of His Grace and the travelling knights, where she is kept in fine style and out of mischief, under the watchful eye of her companion Mistress Evelyn.
